The Bible is a collection of words inspired by God in the heart of men, consisting of the Old Testament (Hebrew Scriptures) and the New Testament. It serves as a manual for Christians to live by faith and practice, containing teachings, stories, prophecies, and spiritual principles that have transformed several lives around the world.
You need to understand who God is from the Biblical perspective because it will help build your faith and also help you stay in Faith. The Bible affirms God as the creator of the heavens, the earth, animal, all humans and everything we can see around us.
You can read the book of Genesis 1 & 2 in the Bible and you will that God is a creator and He is the creator of all things, we are His creation.
The Bible also describes God in different ways to help us understand who God is. I will be sharing with you who God is to us based on His relationship with us. It portrays Him as a loving and caring Father, compassionate and merciful, who desires a personal relationship with His creation.
God is depicted as a shepherd, guiding and protecting His people, and a rock, symbolizing His strength and stability. Additionally, the Bible refers to God as the King of kings, displaying His sovereignty and authority. He is portrayed as a consuming fire, representing His holiness and purity. These diverse descriptions highlight different aspects of God’s character, allowing us to better understand and relate to Him.
Names of God
There are a lot of names attributed to God in the Bible, each describing the different character and nature of God. These names give us a better understanding of who God is and how to reverence Him.
One of the popular names of God is Yahweh (often translated as “LORD” in English), which signifies the self-existent and eternal nature of God. It highlights His faithfulness, covenant-keeping nature, and presence with His people. Another important name is Elohim, which describes God’s power and authority as the Creator of the universe.
God is also known as the El Shaddai, which means “God Almighty.” This name emphasizes His limitless power and ability to provide for and protect His children.
God is known as Adonai which portrays God as the ultimate Lord and Master, highlighting His sovereignty and rulership over all things.
The Bible teaches us that Jesus is the Son of God and the Word made flesh. Titles such as “Messiah” (Christ), “Savior,” and “Emmanuel” (God with us) emphasize His role as the redeemer and mediator between God and humanity.
There are more descriptive names to describe God’s characteristics. For instance, Jehovah-Jireh signifies “The Lord will provide,” highlighting His provision and care. Jehovah-Rapha speaks of God as the healer and Jehovah-Nissi as the banner of victory.
These names show us that God is the most important person we need in life because in Him is everything we want and need. By studying and meditating on these names, we gain deeper insight into His character and find comfort, guidance, and assurance in our relationship with Him.
Attributes Of God
The attributes of God refer to the inherent qualities and characteristics that define God’s nature. The Bible presents a lot of attributes that help us understand who God is and how He interacts with His creation.
One of the most important attributes of God is that God is omnipotent, which means He possesses unlimited power and is capable of accomplishing anything according to His will. This attribute assures us that nothing is impossible for Him.
God’s omniscience tells us about His all-knowing nature. He knows about everything, including the past, present, and future, which is why the Bible describes God as the Alpha(Beginning) and Omega(Ending). This attribute reveals His wisdom, guidance, and ability to fulfil His plans.
God’s omnipresence denotes His presence everywhere at all times. He is not confined to a specific location but is present throughout the entire universe. This attribute assures us that we are never alone and that He is always with us.
God’s holiness refers to His hatred for sin and he cannot behold sin. It shows that God is pure and perfect without any blemish. His holiness is the standard by which all righteousness is measured. It highlights His perfection and righteousness.
God’s love and mercy are essential attributes that demonstrate His care, compassion, and forgiveness towards mankind. His love is unconditional and sacrificial because He loved us even before He created us and His mercy extends His compassion and forgiveness to those who seek Him.
Additionally, God is just and righteous. The Bible refers to God as the righteous judge, which means God judges rightly all the time. His justice ensures that wrongdoing is punished, while His righteousness upholds truth.
These attributes, discussed above help describe God’s character and nature. As we study and meditate on these attributes based on the Bible, it helps deepen our reverence, trust, and awe of God while providing comfort, guidance, and assurance in our relationship with Him.
The works of God
The works of God talk about the capacity of God and His interventions in the world, demonstrating His power, love, and sovereignty. The Bible reveals numerous significant works of God that provide insight into His nature and purpose.
Creation stands as the first work, where God brought the universe into existence out of nothing. Through His creative power, He formed the heavens, the earth, and all living creatures. This work displays His wisdom, beauty, and authority as the ultimate Creator. (Psalms 19)
God’s redemptive works are also an important aspect. This work can be seen in the person and work of Jesus Christ, who came to reconcile humanity to God through His life, death, and resurrection. This act of love and sacrifice showcases God’s plan for restoration and salvation.
God is known as the faithful God, which means He cannot fail. We can see from the Bible how He guided and protected His people, fulfilled prophecies, performed miracles, and orchestrated events to accomplish His purposes. Examples include the Exodus from Egypt, the parting of the Red Sea, entering into the promised land and the preservation of Israel.
Furthermore, God continues to work in us and through us. He transforms hearts, brings healing, provides for needs, grants wisdom, and empowers believers through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. His work is continuous and available in the lives of those who believe in Him. “Ph’p:2:13: For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.”
God wants every human to attain eternal life and this is the most important work of God for mankind, that we should be like Him and be transformed into His glory. This final will usher in a new heaven and earth, where God’s presence will be fully experienced, and His purposes will be fully accomplished. “2Co:3:18: But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.”
When we think of the goodness of God’s work, it reminds us of His active involvement in the world and our lives. It inspires awe, gratitude, and trust, inviting us to participate in His redemptive work and giving us hope for a better tomorrow in Christ Jesus.
God’s relationship with mankind
One of the major themes in the bible is the relationship between God and mankind, revealing God’s desire for communion and fellowship with His creation. This relationship can be summarized as love, grace, and a call to obedience.
God’s love for us is unconditional and constant. He created us in His image, filling us up with His spirit. Despite humanity’s unfaithfulness and sin, God’s love for us remains constant, seeking to reconcile and restore the broken relationship.
God shows mercy to us by offering forgiveness and salvation through Jesus Christ. By accepting Jesus Christ into your life, you can enter into a restored relationship with God, experiencing His presence and transforming power.
Being obedient is needed to stay in a relationship with God. Jesus Christ said that if you love me, you will keep my commandment. God expects us to live a righteous and holy life because God is holy. Obedience is not a means to earn God’s love, but a response of gratitude and reverence for His goodness.
Furthermore, God wants us to build deep relationships with Him. Through prayer, worship, and studying His Word, we can commune with God all the time, seeking His guidance, comfort, and wisdom.
Ultimately, the relationship between God and mankind is marked by a covenant, God has fulfilled His part already and He expects us to fulfil our part so that we can enter the rest God has prepared for us. It is a source of deep fulfilment, purpose, and hope, as humans find their true identity and purpose in God as their Creator and Sustainer.

In conclusion, the Bible provides a comprehensive understanding of God’s nature, attributes, works, and desired relationship with humanity. Through the descriptions, metaphors, and names attributed to God, we gain a deeper perspective of His character and can better relate to Him. The attributes of God, such as His omnipotence, omniscience, omnipresence, holiness, love, mercy, justice, and righteousness, reveal the depth and complexity of His nature.
