Helen Adams Keller was an American author, lecturer, political activist and disability rights advocate.

She was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama. She lost her ability to see and hear when she was nineteen months.
Keller’s primary means of communication was through home signs. At the age of seven, she met her first teacher and life companion Anne Sullivan, who taught her language, including reading and writing.

Keller authored 14 books, including several speeches, essays and quotes.

She published her autobiography, The Story of My Life (1903) at age 22, with the help of Sullivan and Sullivan’s husband, John Macy. The book narrates the story of her life up to the age of 21 and it was written during her time in college.
