Background
One of the biggest reasons many people never take the first step towards achieving their dreams is the fear of what other people will say. They have ideas, talents, skills and opportunities, but they keep postponing their plans because they are worried about how people will perceive them.
Some people want to start a business but are afraid their friends will laugh at them because they are starting with very little money. Others want to create content on social media, but they are afraid people they know will make negative comments. Some have the desire to learn a new skill, change careers or pursue a different path in life, but they are worried about what people might think.
The truth is that if you allow people’s opinions to control your decisions, you may never become the person God created you to be.
You must understand that everybody starts somewhere. The person you admire today also had a beginning. The business you admire today may have started in a small room, with one customer, limited resources and plenty of uncertainty.
You cannot allow the fear of being laughed at to stop you from taking the first step. It is better to start small and grow than to spend years explaining why you never started.
Consider the story of someone who understood the value of starting small.
The Story of Colonel Sanders: Starting Again When Others Had Given Up
Harland Sanders, popularly known as Colonel Sanders, the founder of KFC, did not become successful overnight. He had worked in different jobs and operated a roadside restaurant before building the business that would eventually become one of the world’s best-known fast-food brands.
When his restaurant business was affected by changes to the road network, Sanders began taking his chicken recipe to restaurant owners and trying to persuade them to sell it. According to the well-known account of his early franchising journey, he faced numerous rejections before finding people willing to give his idea a chance.
He did not have the kind of impressive business structure people associate with KFC today. He started with a recipe, determination and a willingness to keep approaching people.
Today, KFC is recognised internationally, but it began with one man’s decision to keep working on an idea despite setbacks and rejection.
There is an important lesson here: never allow your present circumstances or other people’s reactions to determine what you believe is possible in your future.
You may be starting with one customer, one product, one service or a small audience. That does not mean your vision is small. What matters is that you are willing to begin, learn and keep improving.
Here are some important things you need to understand if you want to overcome the fear of what people will say when you start small.
1. Understand That You Are Unique
One of the first things you need to understand is that you are unique. God created you with your own abilities, talents, gifts and purpose. There is nobody else exactly like you.
Your journey will not necessarily look like someone else’s journey. The opportunities available to you, your background, your experiences and the resources you have may be completely different from those of another person.
For example, you may see someone who started a business with millions of naira, while you are struggling to gather ₦50,000 to get yours started. You may see someone with a beautiful office, expensive equipment and a large team, while you are working from your bedroom.
Don’t allow these differences to discourage you.
You must understand that your current situation does not define your final destination. What you have today may be small, but you can grow it into something meaningful if you are willing to work, learn and remain consistent.
Stop comparing your beginning with someone else’s middle. Recognise your uniqueness and make the best use of what God has placed in your hands.
2. Don’t Try to Be Another Person; Be Yourself
One mistake people make when starting something new is trying too hard to become like someone they admire.
You see someone doing well in business, and suddenly you want to copy everything about them. You want to talk like them, dress like them, run your business like them and even follow their exact strategy.
There is nothing wrong with learning from successful people. In fact, you should learn from people who have achieved what you are trying to achieve. However, learning from someone is different from trying to become that person.
You have your own personality, experiences, strengths and approach to life. Allow these things to reflect in what you do.
If you want to start a business, focus on building something that represents your values and serves your customers well. If you want to become a content creator, develop your own voice instead of spending all your time trying to sound like another creator.
People may not understand your approach at the beginning, but that should not make you abandon your identity.
Remember, you don’t have to be another person to become successful. You only need to become the best version of yourself.
3. Know What God Says About You
One of the most powerful ways to overcome the fear of people’s opinions is to understand what God says about you.
Sometimes, the reason people are afraid to start small is that they have allowed other people’s opinions to become more important than God’s Word.
Someone tells you that you cannot succeed, and you begin to doubt yourself. Someone laughs at your business idea, and you start questioning whether you have what it takes. Someone makes a negative comment about your appearance, background or present circumstances, and you allow that statement to affect your confidence.
But what does God say about you?
Jeremiah 29:11 (NKJV) says:
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.”
God has good plans for your life. Your present circumstances do not cancel His plans for you.
Also, Philippians 4:13 reminds us that we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us.
When you understand these truths, you begin to approach life differently. You stop allowing negative comments to determine what you can achieve. You become more confident in taking steps towards your goals because your confidence is no longer built entirely on people’s approval.
This does not mean you should ignore advice or refuse correction. It means you should not allow negative opinions to destroy your confidence or stop you from pursuing something worthwhile.
4. The Most Important Opinion Is What God Thinks About You
You need to understand that you cannot please everybody. No matter what you do, there will always be people who agree with you and people who disagree with you.
If you start a business, some people will support you, while others may laugh at your efforts. If you decide to change your career, some people may encourage you, while others may question your decision.
Even when you succeed, not everybody will celebrate you.
This is why you must be careful about whose opinion you allow to influence your decisions.
As Christians, our ultimate desire should be to please God rather than live for people’s approval. Galatians 1:10 reminds us that we cannot make pleasing people our highest priority while claiming to be servants of Christ.
Before you make an important decision, ask yourself whether your actions are consistent with God’s Word and whether you are pursuing something worthwhile.
You should listen to people who have experience, learn from constructive criticism and accept correction when necessary. But never allow the fear of what people will say to become the reason you abandon a good idea or refuse to take a step of faith.
At the end of the day, people’s opinions will not determine your relationship with God or the purpose He has given you.
5. Intentionally Build Your Brand
Another important thing you need to do is intentionally build your brand.
Whether you are starting a small business, offering a service, creating content or building a career, you need to understand how you want people to perceive you.
Your brand is not just your logo, business name, website or social media design. It is also the impression people have about you, the value you offer and the experience they receive when they interact with you.
Don’t be ashamed of your beginning. Instead, use your beginning as an opportunity to establish a good foundation.
If you are starting a business from home, present your business professionally. If you are offering a service, deliver quality work even when you have only one customer. If you are building an online presence, share valuable content consistently.
You don’t need an expensive office or a large team before you can begin building a professional brand.
For example, a young graphic designer who works from home can build a strong brand by consistently producing quality designs, communicating properly with clients and delivering projects on time.
As the business grows, the person can improve the website, invest in better equipment, employ staff and expand operations.
The important thing is to start intentionally.
Don’t wait until you have everything before you begin to present yourself professionally. Build your reputation with the little you have, and allow your consistency and quality of work to speak for you.
6. Understand That Everybody Starts Somewhere
One of the things that can help you overcome the fear of people’s opinions is remembering that nobody starts at the top.
Every successful business, career or organisation has a starting point. Some people started in their homes, some started with one customer, and others started with very little money.
Think about the story of Colonel Sanders. He began serving chicken to travellers at a roadside service station in Kentucky. His business later developed into a restaurant, and he eventually began franchising his chicken business. The first KFC franchise opened in 1952. KFC+1
The business did not begin with the global recognition it has today.
There is a lesson here for anyone who is afraid to start small: don’t despise your beginning.
You may be selling products from your house today, but that does not mean you cannot own a shop tomorrow. You may be working as a freelancer today, but that does not mean you cannot build an agency in the future.
Your beginning is simply the first stage of your journey.
Instead of worrying about how people see you today, concentrate on what you are building and how you can improve.
7. Stop Waiting for Everybody to Understand Your Vision
Sometimes, people will not understand what you are trying to achieve, especially when they cannot see the bigger picture.
You may tell someone about your business idea, and instead of encouraging you, they will immediately start explaining why it cannot work.
Some people judge opportunities based on what they have experienced. If they have never seen someone succeed in a particular area, they may find it difficult to believe that you can succeed there.
However, you must understand that not everybody needs to understand your vision before you can pursue it.
There are times when you need to work quietly, develop your skills, test your ideas and allow the results to speak for themselves.
You don’t have to announce every plan or explain every decision to everybody. Sometimes, sharing your plans with the wrong people can expose you to unnecessary discouragement.
Be wise about who you share your ideas with. Look for people who have experience, people who can offer useful advice and people who genuinely want to see you grow.
Remember, you are responsible for taking action on your vision, not for convincing everybody to believe in it.
8. Develop the Courage to Be a Beginner
Many people want to become successful, but they don’t want to experience the uncomfortable stage of learning.
They want to speak confidently, but they are afraid of making mistakes. They want to run a successful business, but they don’t want anyone to see them struggling to understand how things work.
The truth is that you cannot become an expert without first being a beginner.
When you start something new, you may make mistakes. Your first design may not be as good as you expected. Your first business advertisement may not generate enough customers. Your first video may receive very few views.
That is part of the learning process.
Don’t allow the fear of making mistakes to stop you from developing yourself. Instead, learn from your experiences and keep improving.
If you are starting a business, study your customers, understand your market and improve your products or services. If you are learning a new skill, practise regularly and seek feedback.
The people who become good at what they do are often those who are willing to remain learners.
It is better to be a beginner who is making progress than someone who has spent years dreaming about becoming successful without taking action.
9. Surround Yourself with People Who Encourage Growth
The people you spend time with can influence how you see yourself and the decisions you make.
If you constantly surround yourself with people who laugh at every new idea, discourage your efforts and make you feel ashamed of starting small, it may become difficult to maintain your confidence.
This does not mean you should avoid everyone who disagrees with you. Constructive criticism is important, and you need people who can tell you the truth when you are making mistakes.
However, there is a difference between someone who corrects you because they want you to improve and someone who constantly discourages you without offering anything useful.
Find people who are also working towards meaningful goals. Connect with business owners, professionals, mentors and individuals who are willing to learn and grow.
When you surround yourself with people who value progress, you begin to understand that starting small is not something to be ashamed of.
You will also learn from their experiences, mistakes and achievements.
10. Take Action Before Fear Takes Over
Finally, you must learn to take action even when you feel afraid.
Sometimes, the more you think about what people will say, the more reasons you will find not to start.
You may spend weeks planning a business, months thinking about creating content or years talking about an idea without making any meaningful progress.
At some point, you need to stop overthinking and take the first step.
If you want to start a business, identify what you can offer and find your first customer. If you want to become a content creator, publish your first useful post or video. If you want to learn a new skill, enrol in a course and begin practising.
You don’t have to get everything right from the beginning. You only need to be willing to start, learn and improve.
Remember that confidence often grows through action. The more you take steps towards your goals, the more comfortable you become with the process.
Don’t wait until you are no longer afraid. Start with the courage you have today.
Conclusion
The fear of what people will say has stopped many people from pursuing their dreams. Some have the talent, ideas and opportunities to build something meaningful, but they remain in the same position because they are too concerned about how others will perceive them.
You must understand that your life is not a competition with anybody. You have your own journey, your own abilities and your own purpose.
Don’t try to become another person. Recognise your uniqueness, understand what God says about you and make it your priority to live in a way that pleases Him.
Be intentional about building your brand, develop your skills, surround yourself with people who encourage growth and, most importantly, take action.
You may not have everything you need today, but you can start with what you have. Don’t allow the fear of people’s opinions to keep you from becoming who God created you to be.
Start small, remain consistent, keep improving and trust God with the journey.
Your beginning may not impress everybody, but that should never be the reason you refuse to begin.
